We had great plans for a bike ride before we headed to Port aux Basque (480ish km) but the showers were a deterrent. So we thought as we are catching the midnight ferry we will have time later. Showers continued. Environment Canada said they should stop by noon. They lied. At 177 km before Port Aux Basques the rain is horizontal, sheet rain, waves on the road and Greg has put the truck in 4 wheel drive. This is the worst we have driven in so far on this trip and we have had lots of rain. Winds at 70-80 kmph again.
We did hear a weird voice saying “Hi Brian” and were very puzzled until we figured out we must have been passing Corner Brook. Couldn’t see anything just heard this disembodied the voice. For those who don’t know.. our brother-in-law Brian came from Corner Brook.
Okay…I owe Env’t Canada an apology. After another 80 km and 6 hours of driving through the storm, the rain stopped and we had wonderful sunshine all the way to the ferry. We did go on another slight detour as the GPS said make a turn at Cape Ray which we knew wasn’t correct, but our insatiable curiosity gave us no option, but to see what is down that road. At the end of the road, the Garmin indicated that we should turn left and go 30 km “off road”
We did learn that remains of a Dorset dwelling were discovered in the 1960s.
As we went back to the highway we decided to have a last ride in NL. As Greg goes to get the bike off the truck, the hydraulics don’t work..he does manage to get it going (he thinks its a faulty switch), but is apprehensive to put it all the way down in case it won’t go back up…. We are outside the town and we have a ferry to catch. Oh well…. We found a great walking path instead …we putz around and then go to the ferry to wait.
