As you may have guessed, it was a very leisurely start to the day. We headed to Fort Stevens which has a long military history of protecting the mouth of the Columbia River from its enemies which at one time had even included Canada.
Some very unique armaments had been developed long before I would have thought they were. Once in the fort area, for a few extra dollars, we took a guided tour of the underground tunnels that housed the military, stored and moved artillery shells through out the complex and at one time during WW 2, housed one of the major command posts. It was interesting to learn that a Japanese submarine had fired 17 shells at the area and had only succeeded in damaging the baseball field.
We stopped at several more buildings that were somewhat mysterious in their function. They seemed to be designed to keep something in rather than out but still had the systems in place to store an move shells through that portion of the complex.
Next stop was a beach where one can see the few remaining ribs of a 1906 ship that ran aground. The beach seemed endless. This is where I spotted a beautifully painted Chev Impala that I thought was a 1965 but Larry called it at 1966.
The owner was doing something on the car and having had the same car in a 1967 model year I just had to talk to him. He introduced himself as Mike (Goldwing). It was obvious that Mike did a lot of work on what I termed a labour of love. Then Goldwing found out that Larry rides a Goldwing.
The conversation of course led to the hood being lifted for a ‘peek-see’ which in turn led to a couple of issues he was trying to resolve which led to Ties having a couple of great suggestions for him, which led to more discussion about motorcycles which led to a walk over to our rides, which led to…..well you can figure out the rest.
We had great time meeting Mike and chatting with him. Hey Goldwing, if you are out there and reading this, we would love to hear from you. It was a real pleasure meeting you and seeing the great job you are doing on the Chevy.
Next out to a jetty to watch the waves crashing on the rocks, then back to the hotel, a slow walk down the water front to Gino’s pizza where I had very tasty Mexican pizza. And done for the day.

Good job on the blogs today. I think a day of rest is what we needed before we head home.
