From See Two See: June 29, 2019

A fairly short distance to drive today so a bit of later start some of which was due to someone coming up to ask how the motorcycle gets on the back of the truck. They don’t believe Greg’s story that I am an Olympic weightlifter and hold this big board up to the back of the truck and he rides up.  We decided not to go on the 401 (main highway) and take the road that goes along the lake and through the towns.  Our first wows for the day was when we were driving through Thousand Islands. Every little piece of rock that could remotely have anything built on it had a house. Many seemed to have the water lapping at the door.

Every little rock has a house on it.

Greg noted that the garages seemed to have flooded until we had an “ah ha” moment and realized that the garages were for boats. Thousand Islands are a group of more than 1800 islands at the outlet of Lake Ontario at the head of the St. Lawrence River and certainly is a place where those whom have more money than we do come and play in the summer. We learned later that the water had been high and had caused damage to many houses on the various lakes. The aunt where we could have stayed lost 10 feet of shoreline this year.  A number of the area campgrounds are closed due to the flooding. Have to confess, when we see some the flooded homes, we have to dig real deep to feel sorry for the owners.

What is there to say about this?

e drove through many of the towns and small cities such as Kingston, Trenton, Odessa, Napanee, Shannonville and Belleville till we reached our destination; Brighton. We also drove through part of the Mohawk reservation and certainly saw the difference in the price of fuel.

Once we got settled in we took off and backtracked to Belleville to have dinner with Steve, Patty and Christian. These are friends from Alberta who moved back to Patty’s hometown 5 years ago. It was so nice to see them again and get caught up. It was also great to have a wonderful home cooked meal and a nice local wine.

After dinner we headed back to the campsite in time for fireworks.  They were fairly low key ones but were quite lovely.  Also got a chance to talk to Margery and wish her happy birthday (Margery is my much older sister).
