From See Two See: June 13, 2019

The ferry left Port aux Basques and arrived in North Sydney on time so we were on the road shortly after 7am.  Our first stop was to go into Sydney and find a Starbucks.  We then headed for Englishtown. Greg had read about Angus “giant”  MacAskill, who was 7ft 9in; weighed 425lbs and had been a member of Barnum and Bailey circus. Angus would lift a 1270 kilo anchor just for exercise. There was a museum in his hometown and we thought we would go have a look. Unfortunately it was not open so we peered through the windows. For more about Angus MacAskill (click here)

From there we headed to Baddeck on Bras d’or Lake. We checked into the Silver Dart, where we stayed 20-25 years ago. It has changed a tad since then; bigger and more posh. As it was a lovely day (my first day in shorts since Fredericton) and the forecast was for rain tomorrow we unloaded the bike and headed out for a trip around the Cabot trail.  We stopped in Ingonish at the Keltic Lodge for lunch.

Keltic Lodge

A beautiful setting and I guess if you play golf you might say a great golf course. We chatted with a tour guide when we were at the lodge and he told us that the Cabot trail was the number one motorcycle course in North America. After checking several references, there is a lot of discussion about “best”, however, Cabot Trail is always is amongst the top.

So as you can imagine we went around curves, up and down hills, got stuck behind a fuel truck that struggled to go up the bigger hills, and patiently waited at road construction stops. At one construction stop, the crew was winding down for the day with an animated discussion about which pub they we going to head to for the evening.  The scenery is so beautiful.

We  realized that if we continued to stop at every look out spot we would be riding till midnight.  We made a slight detour and ended up at Bay St. Lawrence; a fishing village situated on a peninsula which is just across the water from a place named Meat Cove.

We suspected something was amiss when suddenly there was no one else on the road.  Then we spotted a sign that said “road ends” and there we were, this beautiful little fishing village that we never would have seen if not for one missed turn.

Fortunately the extra distance was only 12 km in and 12 km out.  It was a spectacular day for a ride. Our longest one on the trip. We arrived back at the motel tired and hungry so cleaned up  (can’t go out to dinner with helmet hair) (Marion can’t but Greg can) and ate at the motel restaurant.  I think we were in bed by 930.
