The Fog

Fog and seagulls, reminds me of Alfred Hitchcock’s movie “the Birds”. We bundled up in our jeans and long sleeves but shorty after we left Port aux Basque there seemed to be a line in the road and the fog disappeared. It was so amazing to see the fog roll down the side of the mountain and see the band stretch over the water.

The fog line just above the water.

My heavens we have a stunning country. Snow on hilltops and occasionally on side of the road (191 meters above sea level). It seemed that every time we went around a corner there was another lake, river or stream.  The view around each curve was as stunning or more stunning than the previous one.

The mist rolling off of the ice topped mountains,

The first part of the day we were on the TransCanada and passed through Corner Brook and  stopped in Deer Lake. Met a trucker there who told us we should be going to Ferryland if we wanted to see the icebergs. It turns out that his aunt’s home is the one in the picture  we often see (two houses and a big iceberg). Apparently this is coming out soon in a stamp.  We will certainly keep this in mind.  As we continued the day got warmer and reached into the low 20s (and we were dressed for 6C). To quote my sister ” I’m hot”.

Early hints of what Gros Morne Park offers.

Before we knew it we entered Gros Morne park, which is not only a national park but is also a UNESCO  World Heritage Site. We could see why. It is a geological marvel and stunning.  Our first stop was the Discovery Centre. This Centre focuses on geology and how earth has been formed and how we see evidence for this in Gros Morne. It was here  that scientists discovered that plate tectonics was a viable theory.

Stunning! or What?

We now have to decide which hikes we might take and when. Should we head out to St Anthony for the iceberg festival or stay her for a couple of days. As  the day was progressing we turned to a search for a place for the night and found some lovely cabins. Then dinner.

We headed out for Rocky Harbor, situated on the Gulf of St. Lawrence. We travelled along a wonderful motorcycle road; up and down hills, round curves,  and s shaped roads. No wonder we saw more motorcycles on this road than we have seen anytime on our trip.  Along the road we saw a sign for “The old store café”.

Great food and friendly staff

Sounded interesting so we hung a left and ended up in Norris Point on Bonne Bay.  People come here to hike and do all sorts of things on the water.  We so enjoy going to these places and trying out different foods ( I had a sweet potato panini.. It was yummy). Back to our cabin and a cup of tea and a decision for tomorrow.  Our cabin is situated part way up the side of a mountain.  As we work on the blog and reservations,  our living room window frames a marvelous view down the length of the valley that is headed by some of he oldest rocks on the planet.  This is going to be really hard to look at first thing in the morning, NOT!
